Members Programme of Events for 2012

The 1st Monday of most months, (except Bank Holidays and AGM), will have an 'informal' meeting at Cinderbarrow.
The 3rd Monday of each month will have a 'structured' meeting.

All meetings start at 7.30pm.

January

Monday 2nd

Informal
Monday 16th Topic; Valve gears; Stan Jackson. Covering the reasons for and the many various types. Then a detailed look at Walschaerts & Stephensons gears, the two most popular, with a graphic display of how the action of these gears can be demonstrated on a computer.

February

Monday 6th

Monday 20th Sale night. Anything in your workshop that you now look upon as redundant could be precisely what another member has been looking for! Why not bring it along with your asking price; if it's sold, 10% goes into the Society's coffers.

Project Night. What are you building? This is the evening to bring it along and discuss any points of interest or items causing any problem. Have a look at other member’s work. Unfinished work seldom appears in exhibition, yet can be of greater interest at that stage.

April

Sunday 1st

Our Summer season's 1st (unadvertised) public running day. All the operational items are brought into use to check correct function. All members very welcome to join the action. Training/guidance given to the various tasks involved. The Lancaster & Morecambe Deaf Children's Society will be our guests. Boiler testing, hydraulic and/or steam, available on site today; all members needing certification please try to use this occasion.
Monday 2nd Informal
Friday 6th Good Friday. The 1st public running day of our summer season: 10.30am to almost 4.00pm weather permitting; short break for lunch. Every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday from now until the last Sunday in September.
Sunday 8th Easter Sunday. Public running day.
Monday 9th Easter Monday. Public running day.
Monday 16th Stanier Pacific's; LMS film; Crewe works then and now, talk by George Nightingale. Now a retired shed master from Carnforth MPD, in 1937 an apprentice at Crewe works: George will present a film high-lighting the changes in 'health & safety' comparing his early pre-war days in the works with the situation as it stands today.
Tuesday 17th Members' 'play day'. It's now 3 years since the suggestion that the 3rd Tuesday of each month should be for members to use Cinderbarrow rather than build it: this theme is now a recognised part of our programme!

May

Monday 7th

Early May Bank Holiday. Public Running Day. No Meeting.
Tuesday 15th Members' 'Play Day'
Monday 21st Topic. Sheet metal working and Punch Presses; David Wright. This will explain punch presses and there use in the manufacture of sheet metal components, with some samples to examine and possibly video's of such machines at work.

June

Monday 4th

Spring Bank Holiday. Public running day, no meeting.
Tuesday 5th Her Majesty the Queen's Diamond Jubilee; Members running afternoon and evening. BBQ in the early evening, high quality meats well cooked; bring your own choice of liquid refreshments, the clubroom does not have a bar! Hot food planned to be served from 6.00pm.
Monday 18th "Community Rail Partnerships-The Furness Line", talk by Jim Trotman. This will explain what CRP's are and briefly mention the 3 on-going in Cumbria and the 6 in Lancashire. Jim will then concentrate on the Furness Line with its Barrow, Lancaster & Manchester service. The present practical projects that are taking place, together with possible future ideas for the line will be covered.
Tuesday 19th Members' 'Play Day'
Monday 25th Open Day briefing; all "operating" members please attend. This will be the third time such a 'briefing day' has been held; they prove to be a very useful exercise. We always manage to find some items of the operation that benefit from planning ahead; also the important item of the catering that we lay on (and gaining a reputation for) will be covered.

July

Monday 2nd

Saturday 7th Open Day. Cinderbarrow welcomes our neighbouring Northern Societies, the biggest day of our annual calendar. The clubroom lays on a superb table of refreshments for all, with many thanks to the arrangement by our members' wives. The day is busy, demanding, memorable and very satisfying, what else would you want??
Monday 16th Pyrotechnics, (light the blue touch paper and stand well clear!), Malcolm Lawrie. Organising modern day fireworks; the development from domestic 'Catherine Wheels & Sparklers' to today's massive displays. With over 30 year's experience, Malcolm will cover the evolution of the latest techniques that are now used for displays watched by thousands.

Saturday 21st

GL5 Rally. First use of our track and eastern marshalling yard by GL5 members. Arriving Friday from mid-morning, Saturday will be time table running. Starting early, 8 am(ish) will see a scheduled use of all their, and our, 5 inch rolling stock. Our own members with GL5 engines are welcome to run; LMMES will arrange signalling and level crossing control, and a 'liaison' O.S. of ours working with GL5 visitors. Visitors would be welcome to run on Sunday if track space is available along with our normal passenger services.

August

Monday 6th

Monday 20th LNWR coal tank No. 1054, an illustrated presentation by Peter Skellon. A history of this locomotive class; and the story of the only surviving example and its recent 13 year major overhaul - including coverage of the extensive boiler repair, by volunteers of the Bahamas Locomotive Society. Pete is the Society's Collections Manager.

September

Monday 3rd

Monday 17th Talk; RNLI by Chris Pattern. Covering the Morecambe Station of the RNLI and the equipment they have available there. The use and range of their hovercraft and inshore inflatable rescue vessels. Also a description of the various jobs, and emergencies, that they have been called out for.

Monday 19th Auction Night. Our resident auctioneers, 'Mulholland Green & Mulholland' will organise this year's event, to the advantage of the Society. Any item in your workshop that has lain there for over 4 years? It's probably time to consider a getting rid of it; why not bring it along?

Sunday 16th Jacob's Join. All wives and partners very welcome. A popular finish to Cinderbarrow's year. To avoid driving in the dark, this event to be held on Sunday lunch time, not the Monday evening
